  | GENERAL SPECIFICATION DATA FOR CEDAR ROOFING PRODUCTS |  
     
  CEDAR SHAKE SPECIFICATION  
     
 
  • The contractor shall cover all roof surfaces with Certi- Split shakes bearing the Cedar Shake &
  • Shingle Bureau’s official grade marked label.
  • Shakes for roof shall be No.1 Grade 600 x 13 mm medium hand split and re-sawn Western Red Cedar Shakes CCA treated and kiln dried.
  • Shingles for under courses shall be No.2 Red Label 450 x 11 mm Western Red Cedar Shingles CCA treated and kiln dried.
  • Roof shingles/shakes shall be laid with a weather exposure of 255 mm.
 
     
 

ROOF APPLICATION SHEATHING BOARD

     
 
  • Centigrade shingles and Certi-Split shakes shall be applied over spaced roofing battens.
  • All roofing battens shall 70 x 19 (finished size) boards spaced in accordance with the shake exposure.
  • All battens shall be No.1 Structural Grade Selangan Batu (Balau).
 
     
  ROOFING FELT INTERLAY (FOR SHAKE ONLY)  
     
 
  • Contractor shall apply a 450 mm wide strip of roofing felt shall be applied over the top portion of the shakes and extend onto the battens. Bottom edge of felt shall be positioned at a distance above the butt equal to twice the weather exposure.
 
     
 

ROOFING GENERAL APPLICATION DATA

 
 
  • Shakes shall be at least doubled at all eaves.
  • Butts of the shingles/shakes in the first course on
  • roofs shall project 38 mm from the edge of roof eaves.
  • Shakes shall be be spaced apart not less than 10 mm nor more than 16 mm.

 
  ROOFING, SHINGLES/SHAKES, MISCELLANEOUS FLASHINGS  
     
 
  • All pipes projecting through roofs shall be flashed and counter flashed. These flashings shall extend 75 mm up under the sheathing paper and not less than 75 mm horizontally. They shall be of sufficient length to cover the shingle/shake course next below the pipe and to extend up under the straight course above as far as possible without being punctured by nails.

 
  HIPS AND RIDGES  
     
 
  • All shingles/shake hips and ridges shall be of alternate overlap type applied at the same exposure as field of roof and with nails long to penetrate into roof battens.
 
     
 

NAILS AND NAILING SHINGLES/SHAKE

 
     
 
  • Nails shall be driven flush but not so that the nail head crushes the wood. They shall be placed approximately 18 to 25 mm from the side edges of the shingles/shakes and 38 to 50 mm above the butt line of the following course.
  • Roof shakes shall be secured with corrosion-resistant, hot- dipped, zinc- coated nails or aluminum or stainless steel nails- type 304 or 316. Nails shall be long enough to penetrate battens.
